Assistant Professor of Sociology

New York University

Guillermina Altomonte is Assistant Professor of Sociology at New York University. Her research analyzes how cultural and material forces shape markets of care, particularly for the elderly. Her current book project draws on ethnography, interviews, and archival material to interrogate independence as a remarkably undisputed goal for old age in the United States. She has also studied the relationship of class privilege to the cultural legitimation of the assisted living industry in Santiago de Chile, where she grew up. Guillermina joined the Carework Network Steering Committee in 2014 and co-chaired the Third Global Summit in Costa Rica in 2023.
